INCREASED USE OF LOCUM GP'S IN ENGLAND "LINKED TO DEPRIVATION"
- 13 Jun
The British Medical Association has warned of an unacceptable "Variation in Care quality", and further buttressed that "patients in the most deprived areas of England face poorer levels of care due to an over-reliance on locum GP's", reports the BBC
BBC News also found after analysing data that in some parts of England, "18% of the GP workforce was made of locums (doctors that stand for and/or temporarily cover a vacancy for an absent doctor) compared to a national average of 3.4%.
The data above which was initially collected by the Health and Social Care Information Centre shows the following:
- In September 2015, there were 1,321 locum GP's working in practices across England
- NHS Bradford city (the most deprived CCG areas in the country) had the 2nd highest use of locum doctors with 18% of it's GP's being classed as temporary practitioners in September 2015
According to the clinical chair of NHS Bradford City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Dr Akram Khan, in some instances, GP practices have been entirely staffed by locum doctors. He said:
"There is a recruitment crisis within this profession."
The BBC reports that:
"NHS England says it will spend extra £206m on boosting GP recruitment, which will see £20,000 bursaries made available in areas that have found it hard to recruit new GP's."
"...it planned to recruit an extra 5,000 doctors to work in general practice by 2020..."
This may ba a catalyst to remedying the situation.
