INSUFFICIENT HELP FOR VULNERABLE WOMEN
- 03 Jun
Domestic abuse services and those designed for high levels of need, do not help the circumstances of vulnerable women.
According to a survey by Women's Aid,
- Of 363 domestic abuse services, there are only 41 services with drug workers, 38 services with alcohol workers and 85 services with mental health support staff, whose capacities are not enough to meet women's needs
- Around a third of women in refuges are getting mental health support and one in ten misuse drugs and alcohol
- In 2015, 92 women and 75 children were turned away from domestic abuse services
The figures above are a fraction of how prevalent these issues are among vulnerable women, which has made some of them evade support.
Women with very complex needs and experiences of violence are usually in very traumatising situations which requires utmost care and attention.
These women, therefore, turn to drugs and alcohol in order to cope with their situations when they need utmost support to rebuild their lives.
Some of these women end up in male dominated environments such as homeless hostels and drug treatment services, which do not meet women's specific needs; this can be intimidating and even unsafe.
