LONDON COUNCILS REQUIRE HELP TO CARE FOR REFUGEE CHILDREN
- 27 Oct
Eight London councils have written a letter to the home secretary, Amber Rudd, for the Home Office to provide more financial and casework support to help care for unaccompanied refugee children who have started to arrive in the UK from France.
The councils need more financial help so they can help to support the refugee children over the next few years, since they "have had their budgets cut by over two-thirds since 2010", according to the Guardian.
Toufique Houssain of Duncan Lewis solicitors was concerned to hear reports from some children, he said:
"We have been receiving texts from some of the children saying that bandits are coming into the containers and stealing their phones and their identity cards proving that they are minors."
Steve Cowan, leader of the council, said:
"It is essential that the Homes Office works with these people who have knowledge and expertise about this group of children to ensure that no child is left behind in the Calais camp."
A Home Office spokesperson also said:
"We have substantially increased the levels of funding we give to local authorities for providing care for unaccompanied children - daily rates have increased by more than 20% and we have an additional £60,000 available for area."
