ONE OF SCOTLAND'S LARGEST HEALTH BOARDS HAS OVERSPENT ON CARE SERVICES

NHS Lothian, one of Scotland's largest health boards, has overspent on care services by £1m a month, Herald Scotland, reports.
Prior to a meeting of the Edinburgh Integration Joint Board (IJB) today, the following figures emerged:
- NHS Lothian aims to eradicate a £6.5m funding gap by the end of the year
- However, by the first couple of months in 2017-2018, this health board overspent by £2.1m
- The figure above is almost twice the predicted shortfall for that period
The entire NHS Lothian budget shows a funding gap of £22.4m and the IJB agreed to savings of £6.5m over the year on health and social care.
Moria Pringle, NHS Lothian's interim chief finance officer's paper, said this in her paper:
"The emerging financial position for both NHS and council services is of concern."
According to the report:
- Prescribing costs and rising budgets for nursing staff and junior doctors in community hospitals is the cause of NHS problems
- Council budgets are under pressure from a rise in direct payments given to council clients for their care
