THE INCREASING FUNDING GAP FOR VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN ENGLAND REQUIRES RECTIFICATION
- 11 May
The Local Government Association is asking for measures to be taken, to tackle the increasing funding gap with children' services in England.
The Local Government Association said the following:
- A shortfall in children's service budget will reach £2bn by 2020
- The shortfall will be £100m over it's previously suggested figure, last October which was £1.9bn
- Its reforms would deliver quality care for all children
- Councils have spent over £600m over what was budgeted in 2015-16 due to increased demand for adult social care, inflation and funding cuts from the central government
- Children's services budget may be down £900m a year
- Changes in population would mean the need for extra services which may cost an additional £1.1bn yearly by 2019-20
According to a spokeswoman for the Department of Education;
"We want every single child, no matter where they live, to receive the same high-quality care and support - and this is exactly what our reforms are set up to deliver.
"We are clear that providing help as early as possible is the most effective way of keeping children safe, and our new What Works Centre for children's social care will ensure social workers across the country are able to learn from best practice."
