Strike suspended for staff at Shelter charity
- 17 Dec
A strike at homelessness charity Shelter has been suspended after negotiations being made last minute.
The strike was intended for three days, and was due to start yesterday but was called off after the management at Shelter proposed an improved offer to their staff. Reports Inside Housing. that was
The negotiation includes better pay rates for beginners, and the withdrawals of plans to review pay for existing staff and will be put to embers in a ballot over the next few days.
A recent Unite ballot found that 69.2% of members supported strike action if it meant that changes would affect the salaries of Shelter's new workers in the charity's advice and support section. However, the originally proposed changes would have meant a deduction of the salaries of new staff.
Peter Storey, Regional Officer for the Unite union which organised the strike stated that the ‘new deal represents a significant improvement on previous offers by the charity'.
Campbell Robb, Chief Executive of Shelter, stated ‘Decisions on these issues are tough and not ones any of us want to make. Along with the package of measures we were able to agree with the union, we were also pleased to reaffirm that we have no plans to review the pay rates of existing staff'.
