New planning guidance looks at accessibility in London
- 29 Oct
Rules have been introduced to ensure that new planning guidance for London ensures developments remain accessible for people with disabilities.
The Accessible London Supplementary planning Guidance looks at lessons learnt through the use of inclusive design principles in the Olympic Park, reports 24dash.
The guidance also contains a chapter on ‘accessible housing' which bulks out guidance in the current local plan to ensure all new homes are built to lifetime home standards. It also requires London boroughs to identify any shortage of specialist housing for older people across all tenures and take co-ordinated action to address these shortfalls.
Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, said: "The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were widely recognised as the most inclusive ever and one way we achieved that was through the design of the venues and the Park. I am determined that we use that experience to ensure that all new developments in London maintains this high level of accessibility - helping to change perceptions of disability and enabling disabled people to be part of our economy and fully contribute to our great city."
