Changes to regulation methods to help the homeless access GP practises
- 30 Sep
A health watchdog is considering changing regulation methods so that more homeless people will be able to access GP practices.
Research by Homeless Link reveals that the Care Quality Commission is reaction to concern that homeless people find it difficult to receive treatment from GPs with 2,500 denied accesses to a GP or dentist, reports Inside Housing.
Alex Bax, chief executi ve of homelessness health specialist Pathway, said this was "a very common experience" for his clients. The Health and Social Care Act introduces legal duties on NHS commissioning organisations to aim to reduce health inequalities in access to services.
Rick Henderson, chief executive of Homeless Link, said: "This commitment from the CQC is a welcome step and we look to them to ensure it leads to significant change in the way GPs engage with those experiencing homelessness."
Howard Sinclair, chief executive of St Mungo's Broadway, said the discussions were a "significant step".
