Confirmation of homeless people sheltering in bins

A survey of waste professionals has revealed that rough sleepers and finding shelter from the cold weather in bins.
The survey was conducted by Streetlink, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and Biffa and has revealed that in the last twelve months almost one in five waste industry staff reported finding people taking refuge in bins, reports Inside Housing.
Of these incidents 58% involved homeless people and 73% were found in wet or cold weather conditions.
Matt Harrison, director of StreetLink, said: "People who sleep rough have difficult choices to make and sheltering in a bin can seem like a safe, dry place to spend the night. However, when the bin is emptied, all too often people are still inside and their lives become immediately at risk."
David Fisher, director of services at Broadway, said: "Sleeping on the streets is an extremely dangerous way to live and, as this research proves, finding refuge in bins can prove to have fatal consequences. Agencies must work together to better protect rough sleepers while also spending time to inspire them away from the streets. Without this support, there is a very real concern that more lives will be lost unnecessarily."
