Postcode lottery for mental health services in Liverpool

Patients can end up waiting five times longer in St Helens than they do in other areas of Liverpool, data has found.
A health watchdog has found that there is a postcode lottery in access to mental health services in Liverpool, with some people being seen much quicker than others, reports the Liverpool Echo.
St Helens had one of the longest wait times in England with 80.5 days between referral and treatment. The national average being 24.6 and the average in Liverpool coming to just 14.6 days.
The St Helens NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) acknowledged the problem and said it was redesigning its mental health service, with performance beginning to improve.
A spokesperson for NHS St Helens CCG said: “We recognise the IAPT service has not been performing at the level we would like. As a result we have redesigned the service specification so it’s much more responsive to people’s current needs, and this service specification is currently out for procurement. We anticipate the new service will be running by the end of the year. However, we have also worked with our current providers to address some issues affecting performance, resulting in a steady improvement over the past six months.”
