A new supported living scheme has opened in Paignton
- 14 Aug
A new supported living service for young people with learning disabilities and autism has opened in Paignton.
Bridgman House has been opened to provide care for up to eight young people in transition from the family home, education or residential care, reports The Torquay Herald.
The property is in the town centre and made up of six one bed flats and a two bedroom cottage.
Care provider Regard has worked with a housing partner to purchase the property after it was refurbished from a former hotel.
Julie Bendelow from Regard has said:
"There is a shortage of this kind of accommodation in Paignton, where young adults with learning disabilities can live as part of the community. It will appeal to local families who play such an important part in their family members' network of support. The service will offer the chance for people to live independent lives and gradually learn to become more self-sufficient with help developing their daily living skills. They can be as private and independent as they like, but if they wish to be sociable the service lends itself well to this too. It will also help give them access to further education, employment, social and recreational activities in the area. The property is in the heart of the town amid the hustle and the bustle, so the people who live here will not feel isolated and be part of everything the town has to offer."
