Give and Take events turn trash to treasure
- 21 Feb
Hackney residents have saved over three months' waste from being thrown away after numerous successful Give and Take events.
Sanctuary Housing and environmental charity ecoACTIVE provided people with the opportunity for an early spring clean and the options to pick up as many items they needed at swap shops held in Kingsmead and Morningside, reports 24dash.
Over the course of the events items were given new homes and over 260kg of items and 50 litres of reclaimed paint were kindly donated by FRP The Paint Place.
Residents across Hackney were asked to donate unwanted items and were able to attend and pick up any needed items for free; whether they donated or not.
Jo Revett, Sanctuary's senior project officer, said: "We were very pleased with the support from the community at both events and they have proven to be very popular. Raising awareness of reducing waste is very important for all communities, and I am hopeful these events have shown our Hackney residents how they can all play their part in giving away items that are no longer needed."
Maripaz De-San-Miguel, education officer and resource coordinator for ecoACTIVE, added: "Local residents were very generous with the donations they made and the events were a huge success. Lots of items found a new home and this has hopefully reduced waste. Events like this aim to increase people's awareness of the important role they have in waste prevention."
