Social landlord supporting families in need

  • One social landlord is offering breakfasts, lunches and learning activities to over 500 families across Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull over the summer. Fruits In Vase 2

The scheme is part of a series by Ashram Housing Association who have teamed up with Sandwell Council, Public Health England, Kellogg's, the England Illegal Money Lending Team, Family Action and Health for Living to run its Holiday Kitchen programme to help boost children's well-being, reports 24dash.

Holiday Kitchen was launched last year and works closely with families of pre and primary school children across areas of the West Midlands who are on low incomes and in need of support. Its aim is to reduce the strain faced by families over the summer holidays by offering free and affordable meals alongside activities set to improve children's well-being and educational opportunities.

Dr Caroline Wolhuter, head of policy and research at 1,000-home provider Ashram, said: "Long summer holidays are a challenging and expensive time for families from all backgrounds, but they are particularly stressful for families on low incomes who are reliant on free school meals and live in neighbourhoods with few leisure facilities. Holiday Kitchen is responding to these challenges by offering dynamic programmes of holiday learning, food and play for families who need it most."

Councillor Simon Hackett, cabinet member for Sandwell children's Services, said: "This is a safety net for many families who struggle to cope during the holidays. Not only does it benefit children's health with a good free or affordable meal but it also encourages families to also enjoy activities where children can carry on learning during the holidays in a fun environment."
