Liberal Democrats propose building 250,000 council homes

  • Liberal Democrat party president Tim Farron has called for a new programme of council house building in his keynote speech at the party's autumn conference.

Addressing delegates yesterday, he set out a vision for 250,000 new council houses to be built by 2015.

    He said:

"Every week when I go out knocking on doors I can guarantee that before the evening is out I will meet a teacher, a nurse, a young copper, who will tell me they have no hope of finding a decent affordable home.

All they want is somewhere they can afford, somewhere they can call home in the community that they serve. This is our chance to help them and build ourselves out of recession at the same time.

It's an immense challenge: immense challenges require immense ambition, so let's commit now to put a roof over the heads of families in need. Let's commit now to build 250,000 council houses. And lets commit now to do it by 2015."
