REPORT SAYS THE STATE OF ASSYLUM ACCOMMODATION IN THE UK IS A 'SHAMEFUL DISGRACE'

  • Report from the Home Affairs Select Committee has branded asylum accommodation in the UK, a 'shameful disgrace', according to 24 Housing.

Yvette Cooper MP who is the chair of the committee made the following clear:

    • In cases where support and accommodation were of good standard for asylum seekers, it was still relatively prevalent in the most deprived areas
    • Local authorities in affluent communities are not doing anything in comparison to their counterparts in other communities that have signed up and are taking more people
    • The Home Office should pay urgent attention to raising standards, improving the inspection regime, sorting out delays in claiming asylum and ensuring adequate funding

    The report also found:

    • The second biggest source of complaints from people living in dispersed accommodation is the infestations of mice, rats and bedbugs
    • Dirty living conditions with families been unable to put their children down on dirty carpets and rotten sofas
    • Lack of sufficient support for vulnerable people like pregnant women in their late stages who share bedrooms or kept in rooms up several stairs
