Over 5,600 households are now claiming Universal Credit
- 12 Jun
By the end of March a total of 5,610 households were claiming universal credit.
Statistics published by the Department for Work and Pensions has revealed the 6,550 households began claiming this new benefit in 2013/14, with 5,610 claiming by the end of March, reports Inside Housing.
Universal credit combines numerous existing benefits, such a housing benefit, into one monthly payment.
The statistics revealed that 70% of claimants were men and six out of ten were under 25 years of age. Currently universal credit has only been rolled out in selected areas of the country for new claimants with "simple claims"- people who are single with disabilities or children.
Universal credit is gradually being rolled out across the country in phases with most claimants expected to be claiming universal credit by the end of2017.
