A scheme that helps vulnerable tenants who are in rent arrears has found a 97% success rate for keeping people in their homes.

Social enterprise Kineara have run a 10-week Rent Support Programme to which works with residents and their families who find themselves in rent arrears and help them get out of debt and get them in a better place emotionally as well as financially.   Monthly Fees 3

The programme has developed in partnership with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and housing association Poplar HARCA, reports 24dash.

Through the programme Kineara has found that residents are often suffering with both physical and mental health problems which cause their debts to spiral. After they identified the cause of a tenant’s arrears Kineara worked with them for a 10-week period to develop strategies to deal with their problems and start paying their rent again.

Six rent support programmes have now been piloted with Poplar HARCA and Guinness Housing Partnership. Of the 35 tenants the programme worked with, 34 have been saved from eviction and 32 have started paying their rent.

As well as saving money the programmes has also had an important social impact with tenants who have used the scheme saying they felt happier, less isolated and valued by their housing association.
