Housing job cuts will hit people with vulnerabilities say union
- 24 Feb
The proposed loss of 60 jobs at an arm's-length management organisation will hit those with vulnerabilities says a union.
Jobs will be lost at South Essex Homes and Southend Council's ALMO due to its management fee being cut, which will result in job losses, reports Inside Housing.
The ALMO runs 21 sheltered housing schemes and eight hostels, but now three of its homeless hostel manager positions are thought to be under threat.
The council's remaining two care homes are also under threat due to the cuts.
Claire Wormald, secretary of the local government branch of Southend Unison, said: ‘Cutting hostel managers from eight to five will have an impact on this support and is exceptionally short-sighted, given the expected increase in homelessness.'
South Essex Homes has said that most staff will be redeployed and is currently restructuring its services.
A spokesperson said: ‘The need to make significant savings in the face of reductions in government grants of £7.6 million in the next financial year and still be able to present a balanced budget will inevitably lead to some job losses. Meanwhile we're investigating a range of possible redeployment opportunities.'
