DATA REVEALS THAT MANY PRACTICES CLOSED LAST YEAR FORCING THOUSANDS OF PATIENTS TO FIND A NEW SURGERY
- 07 Apr
Data by NHS England reveals that almost a hundred practices closed last year, forcing thousands of patients to find a new surgery.
Despite the government's attempts to stop local doctors from shutting their doors, the NHS data showed the following:
- 92 practices shut down in 2016
- Out of the above, 58 practices shut down completely while 34 merged with other local surgeries
- There was a 114% increase in GP closures in 2016 compared to 2014
- 265,000 patients had to change their practice last year
- Brighton which had a total of 7 closures in the city over the last couple of years, had 9,000 patients displaced when four practices closed
According to the GP website, Pulse, family doctors are unable to cope with increased demand and need immediate funds to survive.
Although last year the NHS announced its forward view plan to invest £2.4bn into services by 2020 and the government announced a £500m investment with £16m to support vulnerable practices, these issues still persist.
The Guardian reported what chairman of the British Medical Association's GP committee, Dr, Chaand Nagpaul said to Pulse:
"We know the money, targeted in the right way, for the most severely affected practices, can make a difference.
"The tragedy is that clinical commissioning groups have not delivered their part in making the resources available. Many practices that should have received support have done none to date. That's been a failing of local delivery."
