DATA SHOWS THAT MORE THAN 23,000 ALLEGATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE AGAINST CARERS
- 28 Feb
Data from a Freedom of Information request shows that "over 23,000 allegations have been made against carers working in people's homes across the UK", the BBC reports.
The requests submitted by the BBC Radio 4 programme File on 4 showed the following data:
- Between 2013-14 and 2015-16, there had been at least 23,428 safeguarding alerts across the UK, but only half of the councils provided data
- Most of the alerts related to care were provided in England
- Merely 700 of the 23,428 alerts led to police involvement
- There were only 15 prosecutions
- Most alerts were from elderly people with over 9,700 involving people over the age of 80
- Over 12,000 alerts had to do with neglect, 2,400 with reports of psychological abuse, over 3,400 with incidents of physical abuse and more than 400 claims of sexual abuse
A Department of Health Official said:
"This government has introduced tougher inspections of care services, given councils access to up to £7.6bn of dedicated funding for social care and will continue to challenge local authorities that do not fulfil their duties under the Care Act".
