SURVEY RESULT SHOWS THAT THE SOCIAL CARE CRISIS IS GETTING WORSE
- 03 Nov
A survey of 129 of the 152 directors of adult social services in England, which was open for two weeks in October 2016 shows that the social care crisis has deepened.
Here are findings of the survey:
- Overspends of almost £0.5bn in the sector
- Further closures of residential and nursing homes
- Increased handing back of contracts
- More pressure from the NHS
- 62% of councils have had residential and nursing home closures
- Closure of services has affected a large number of people
- 79% of councils have quality concerns with many residential and nursing home providers
According to the former president of ADASS (Association of Directors of Adult Social Services), Ray James, social care is approaching a 'perfect storm' and vulnerable people may keep getting insufficient help, therefore, the government needs to fund this sector as quickly as possible in order for help to be rendered.
"This survey paints a picture of adult care verging ever nearer to a point of crisis. The funding gaps are a huge concern for the sector because the impact this is having on the lives of thousands of older and disabled people, their families, and carers, is both significant and extremely worrying."
