Almost 300,000 people with disabilities are in unsuitable housing
- 02 Dec
A charity reports has found that nearly 300,000 people with disabilities are stuck on waiting lists and are forced to spend Christmas ‘trapped in unsuitable homes.'
The report found that 84% of councils have no information about wheelchair accessible housing in their area. 38% of councils in the research did have a plan in place to build disabled friendly homes.
The charity estimated 300,000 disabled people are on housing waiting lists after scaling up the responses to freedom of information requests from 151 councils.
It has also been revealed via the research that only 16% of councils were able to provide data on the number of wheelchair accessible homes in their local area and only 10% were able to provide data on the amount built to lifetime home standards.
Clare Pelham, chief executive of Leonard Cheshire, said: "Councillors need to show some understanding ... and take steps to ensure houses in their area are suitable for all the people who live there, including disabled people."
Stephen Williams, the communities minister, said: "The government is introducing new building regulations to help ensure many more disabled friendly homes are built to high standards of accessibility. This includes the first ever building regulation for fully wheelchair accessible housing, along with an intermediate standard similar to lifetime homes."
