Gym in Kent hopes to improve health and fitness of homeless people

Riverside, a housing association in Kent who runs The Quays supported housing centre in Sittingbourne has unveiled a newly refurbished gym.
Riverside is a specialist in working with single homeless people to help them get their lives back on track and into accommodation. Their new project, a gymnasium, has been funded by the Riverside Project Fund, Swale Borough Council (via its Sports and Physical Activity Grant Fund), Kent Police Property Fund and Church Housing Trust, reports 24dash.
Andrew Wallis, Riverside Project Assistant and qualified NVQ Level 2 Gym Instructor, said: “Yesterday’s ‘Fitness For You’ event was a chance for our customers and local agencies to preview the new facilities and activities which will soon be on offer at The Quays. We are delighted to have new equipment including a multi-weight bench press and treadmill thanks to the support from our funders.”
As well as a gym, the centre also has an on-site Community Kitchen which is used as a training space for catering and hospitality courses run in partnership with the Community Chef.
The gym is due to open fully later this year with support from HMP Standford Hill when local community groups will also be able to make use of its facilities.
Donna Lee, Riverside’s Team Leader, said: “It’s great to have on-site facilities and trained instructors like Andrew here at The Quays to make fitness activities accessible and enjoyable for our customers. We hope that the new and improved gym combined with our nutritional training and support will help people to improve their overall wellbeing.”
