New commitment from Surrey council to tackle homelessness
- 03 Jun
Surrey county council has renewed its commitment to tackle homeless, revealing that almost £200,000 is to be spent on homelessness in Mole Valley alone.
Over the last year £2m was spent across the county on housing related support, reports Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser.
Councillors have been advised that homeless prevention should remain a high priority for Surrey with many shelters claiming they are receiving one new request for a bed every two days.
At the end of last year six people were recognised as sleeping rough in Mole Valley, according to homeless charity Shelter, with 28 registered in neighbouring Reigate and Banstead.
A report on the issues concludes: "There is little doubt that without these homelessness prevention services there would be a rapid increase in rough sleeping, aggressive street begging and an increased threat to community safety in Surrey. The council fully recognises the value of these services and is committed to working with our colleagues in the borough and districts to prevent homelessness, preserve community safety and prevent the need for expenditure on high-cost interventions."What do you think of this? Responding to the DWP Consultation: Housing Benefit Reform - Supported Housing "It was well-run, in a good location, and very useful. I've only one suggestion; as the session went on it would perhaps have been useful for bullet points of general agreement about what should be in the sector response to be displayed and added to as the session went on, maybe on a flip chart. Regarding your response paper, I particularly like the answer you give to question 9. In fact the general: "if it ain't broke don't fix it" response could be pushed harder." M.P. - Adref Ltd
