£6m homelessness support centre being built

  • Work has begun on a 63-room residential and support centre for homeless people. Construction Krane

A state-of-the-art centre is being developed in Hillfields, Coventry, by social landlord Whitefriars Housing, which will provide accommodation and training to support to homeless people.

Wates Living Space is developing the new facility on a former industrial site and will see wider regeneration of the area, reports 24dash.

The building is due for completion in spring 2015, and the construction starts on the steel frame this week and will be a significant step forward in the provision of accommodation and support for the city's homeless.

In order to access the accommodation residents will have to sign up to an intensive support programme. The facilities provided will help people achieve future independent living and employment opportunities.

Catherine Collis, assistant director for specialist housing services at Whitefriars, said: "We are delighted to see the project coming to life on site. We have worked alongside our partners to invest significantly, both financially and in terms of time and energy, to bring this development to fruition. Gateway will be an invaluable service to the city as it will allow us to improve vulnerable people's lives while serving the community. Whitefriars' investment into the facility goes beyond the development, having already invested around £12m in Hillfields since 2001, and we will continue to regenerate the local community and environment."
