Mental health boss says suffers will get improved care
- 14 Apr
A mental health boss has pledged to improve the care for people with schizophrenia and psychosis.
Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust's Stuart Bell spoke at the first National Psychosis Summit for NHS leaders on Thursday, reports the Oxford Mail.
He told the London event: "Oxford Health NHS Trust is absolutely committed to making sure people with mental health problems get the same standard of care as those with physical illnesses. We're always looking for new ideas for how we can do things better and use the resources we have as effectively as possible."
The organisers of the event, Rethink Mental Illness, have said that early intervention and community care for mental health is cost effective.
The charity reports that £15 is saved for every £1 spent on early intervention. They also say that too large a proportion of NHS time is spent on long-stay inpatient care than community services. Services like that are vital to helping stop people becoming seriously unwell in the first place, they say.

The presentation was clear, well argued and I always find Michael gives me food for thought even if I don't agree with everything he says. I really like the way he facilitates a discussion in the room and I learn as much from other participants as I do from the presenter which is always good. Right length, right tone."
