Patients in the Highlands waiting up to three years for mental health checks
- 18 Jun
It has been claimed that patients in the Highlands are waiting for up to three and a half years for assessments.
Highland council have said that it is prioritising cases due to increasing demands on services, however Highland Users support Group have called the delay unacceptable, reports the BBC.
Highland Council is responsible for providing officers to assess and assist local people suffering from mental illnesses, many of whom are incapacitated and have learning disabilities.
HUG have said that the delay could prove a danger to vulnerable people and is warning that the system is breaking. The group wants urgent action to be taken.
The council claimed that because of heavy workloads, its officers had had to prioritise cases, but that it was in regular contact with family representatives of those waiting for an assessment to ensure no-one was at risk.
