THE STATUS OF THE SOCIAL CARE SECTOR REQUIRES IMPROVEMENTs
- 10 Mar
"Chancellor, Philip Hammond, has proposed an additional £2bn of funding in the budget, to be spread over three years, with half of that available in 2017-18", according to the Guardian.
It was also found that the social care sector has the following characteristics:
- Low pay
- Insecure Employment
- Inadequate training
- Lack of supervision
- Excessive performance managed risks
- An annual staff turnover of 25%
- Heavy reliance on agency workers
- A lack of robust data collection as local authorities are not required to publish details about individual services
- Data from Care Quality Commission (CQC) is only based on minimum standards
- No long-term strategy for social care
Social care seems like an adjunct to the NHS instead of being an important service in its own right.
While the chancellor announced the budget funding boost, he claimed it would "deliver immediate benefits to the NHS".
The status of social care profession, therefore, requires improvement, for the chancellor's funding to cater to sector concerns.
