402 MILLION POUNDS WILL BE INVESTED IN COUNCILS WITH THE GREATEST HOMELESSNESS DEMAND FROM APRIL 2017
- 17 Mar
According to the government, over the next couple of years, starting from April, £402m will be invested in councils with the greatest homelessness demand.
Presently, funding is only used for homeless households and not for the prevention of homelessness in the first instance.
The funding by the Department for Communities and Local Government is set to perform the following functions:
- Replace the temporary accommodation management fee
- Be ringfenced for just two years
- Enable councils to fund more homelessness service
- Funding has been allocated by the government by combining the number of homelessness acceptances and prevention and relief cases through the securing of a private rented sector tenancy
The allocations would be as follows:
- £186m in 2017/2018
- £191m in 2018/2019
- £25m will be separated for London councils
In a written statement to parliament, Marcus Jones, the homelessness minister, said the funding has been allocated based on "the formula which reflects relative homeless pressures, while at the same time aiming to protect local authorities which currently have high levels of temporary accommodation".
