Bedroom tax removal guaranteed under labour says shadow housing minister
- 22 Sep
Emma Reynolds, Shadow Housing Minister has said that the bedroom tax will be "scrapped in its entirety" under a future Labour Government.
Whilst speaking at the National Housing Federation's conference in Birmingham the MP called the bedroom tax "cruel and iniquitous" and "worst thing the coalition government has done", reports 24dash.
She said that the policy had failed in its primary objective to free up larger social homes for bigger families.
She said: "To the Tories, land has become a speculative commodity rather than something for building residential property on."
On the subject of public land, Ms Reynolds insisted that "too often local authorities sit on land waiting for the value to rise. There is a case for land to be invested as equity rather than sold to the highest bidder."
Ms Reynolds said that should Labour win power in 2015 the party would:
• Help small builders overcome financing problems and ease their access to land.
• Tackle land-banking.
• Deliver a new generation of garden cities.
