Spending Review: Health and Social Care
Chancellor George Osborne has today unveiled £11.5 billion of cuts to public spending. The 2013 Comprehensive Spending Review has three principles: growth, reform and fairness which Osborne referred to throughout his announcement.
So how will this review impact the health and social care sector?
The health budget in 2015-16 will be £110 billion. A significant amount of the health and social care spending will be merged, stating "£3billion will be spent on services commissioned by local NHS & local councils to end the scandal of older people trapped in hospitals because they can't get a bed through social care".
Osborne says old people often fall between the cracks between health and social care and this will be resolved through their integration.
There will be investment in mental health and funding for conditions such as breast and prostate cancer.
All in all, the health budget in 2015-16 will be £110 billion, while capital spending will rise to £4.7 billion. A significant proportion of health and social care spending will be merged with a budget of £3 billion.
