Labour pushing for abolition of bedroom tax
- 18 Dec
Labour plans to push through a vote to retract the bedroom tax in yesterday's opposition day debate.
Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Rachel Reeves guaranteed that she would call a parliamentary vote to abolish the bedroom tax and thus, called on the Lib Dems to join her party. She stated, "It's time for them to do the right thing and vote with us to scrap the tax before Christmas."
Leader of the Labour party, Ed Miliband is fully committed in getting rid of the bedroom tax policy if Labour wins next year's general election. In October, the Lib Dems voted significantly against annulling the bedroom tax in a manifesto debate at its autumn conference in Glasgow. Reports Inside Housing.
Prime Minister Nick Clegg, earlier in the year stated that his party could not support the policy in its current form and wanted an exception for disabled people and, for housing benefits to only be cut if households refuse an offer to move. The party plans to make this part of its 2015 election manifesto.
The bedroom tax limits housing benefits if those who are claiming are considered to have one or more spare rooms. Also, those affected by the tax lose an average of £14 per week.
