People struggling with bedroom tax in Wirral receive help from relief fund
- 30 Jul
A £75,000 "bedroom tax relief fund" has been created to support people in Wirral who are struggling with their rents.
Council chiefs have said the move is aimed to help residents who're affected by the bedroom tax, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Council leader Cllr Phil Davies, also councillor for Birkenhead and Tranmere, said the measure was "delivering on Wirral Labour's commitment" to fight the policy by "pushing" local social housing provider Magenta Living to create the relief fund.
The fund follows a commitment by Phil Davies' Labour group made to Wirral residents saying that they would put a stop to the council challenging bedroom tax appeals that rule in favour of tenants.
Cllr Davies said: "I've instructed officers to implement all tribunal successes brought by local residents."
Cllr Davies added: "I am committed, with my Labour colleagues, to fight the unfair and cruel bedroom tax at every opportunity. This fund is a much-needed boost to struggling families. In government, the Labour party will scrap the bedroom tax. Locally, we are standing up for residents and doing all we can to stop the Tories and their friends from hurting residents."
Birkenhead MP Frank Field, who also chairs the Birkenhead constituency committee, said members were "making a stand and making a difference."
