Proposed benefits freeze could leave claimants losing £558m
- 09 Oct
The Chartered Institute of Housing has estimated that the Conservatives' proposed benefits freeze would lead to claimants losing £558m of housing benefits over two years.
In a manifesto pledge last week George Osborne has announced a plan to freeze working-age benefits for two years from April 2016, reports Inside Housing.
Policy and practise officer at the CIH, Sam Lister, has calculated that this policy will see 1.4 million claimants lose £185m in housing benefit in 2016/17 and £373m in 2017/18.
Mr Lister said: "This policy is an attack on the poor generally, not just on those people who happen to be out of work."
Lord David Freud, welfare reform minister, has said social landlords will be able to work within the freeze.
