1,000 new homes a year

A south west council is releasing 100-acres of land for housing developments so that 1,000 homes can be built a year.
‘Plans for Homes' was unveiled by Plymouth Council on Friday at the South West Housing Summit.
As well as releasing the land the council will also be making £50m of affordable loans available to a group of social landlords in the city to develop homes on the councils land, reports Inside Housing.
The council aims to offer these home to first time buyer with affordable rent and housing co-operatives.
Tudor Evans, leader of the council, said: ‘We have big ambitions to grow our city, there are predictions that the population will increase to 300,000 by 2031 and we need to make sure there are homes available that meet the needs of all those people.'
Mark Lowry, cabinet member for finance whose portfolio includes housing delivery, said: '[It is] incredibly difficult for people to get on the housing ladder and find good quality homes, so we have to act now, we have a plan and we are putting a lot of effort into making sure more properties are built that people can afford to rent and buy.'
