200,000 homes to be built a year

Ed Miliband, when addressing Labour members pledged to solve the housing crisis in Britain by building 200,000 homes a year.
Labour leader, Ed Miliband, in a conference speech focused heavily on the cost of living and pledged that a Labour government would hit the 200,000 annual target by 2020. In his speech Mr Miliband said: "There are nine million people in this country who are renting a home, many of whom would want to buy. We don't just have a cost of living crisis - we have a housing crisis too" reports Inside Housing.
This has come after he warned that at the current rate of house building, Britain will have 2 million too few homes by 2020. Mr Miliband said Labour would give a clear message to developers that they "can't just sit on land and refuse to build". "We will give them a very clear message, either use the land or lose the land, that is what a Labour government would do."
This announcement has been cautiously welcomed by chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing, Grainia Long "We need to build 250,000 new homes a year to house our growing population comfortably, but we are currently completing less than half of that number. A target of 200,000 homes a year is a big step in the right direction. We wait to see the amount of government support Labour would commit to this."
Chief executive of the National Housing Federation, David Orr, has said that Mr Miliband's commitment to increase house building is "greatly welcome." Mr Orr said: "Building more homes will stop house prices and rents spiralling out of control".
