A Call For Councils To Be Given More Powers To Deal with Bad Landlords
- 17 Oct
Labour MP, Graham Jones, co-chair of the all party parliamentary group on housing, wrote to new minister Mr Kris Hopkins on 15 October to call for councils to be given more powers to deal with bad landlords.
Mr Jones, who is a representative of the Hyndburn constituency in Lancashire, according to Inside Housing, urged Mr Hopkins ‘to bear in mind the continued problems of low demand and the housing conditions outside the booming areas in the south.'
He also called on Mr Hopkins to allow councils to apply licensing conditions on the basis of poor standards and said that councils should be able to licence any property ‘without having to jump through bureaucratic hoops.'
Mr Jones also said:
"One directly related issue is the high rate of private rented tenure and the link to widespread poor standards. This affects health, aspiration, education and is destructive to people's lives."
