Five New Towns To Be Built By Labour
- 25 Nov
Emma Reynolds, the shadow housing minister has said that "A Labour government would aim to build around five new towns in its first term."
Inside Housing revealed in September that Labour has commissioned pilot projects to look at ways councils can work more closely with housing associations and developers to double house building by 2020.
The party is looking at diverse ideas, including the formation of council-controlled housing companies to foster development.
Reynolds also said:
"The last time there was a massive increase in housing supply was in the postwar period and we want to recapture that spirit."
"I don't think we will do as well as the Attlee government, with 11 new towns, I think that is quite a lot. I would love to think we could deliver four or five."
Ms Reynolds expressed the fact that a Labour government would create incentives for councils to hand over land to development corporations.
