HOME-SHARING PLATFORMS AND LONDON'S HOUSING CRISIS
- 22 Feb
Tom Copley AM, Labour's London Assembly Housing Spokesperson has discussed worrying issues pertaining to how home-sharing platforms contribute to London's housing crisis.
Copley's discussions yesterday at a City Hall meeting with Airbnb, short term lettings sites, local authorities and community groups focused on the following:
- A focus on the need to stop commercial landlords letting their properties beyond the 90-day limit
- Warning that effective enforcement depends on "effective legislation from government"
- The need to work together "to stop short term letting sites being abused by professional landlords"
In 2015, guidance was issued by the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to remove the need for planning permission to rent out a property or room as temporary accommodation for less than 90 days a year.
In Camden (which has about 8% of all London Airbnb properties):
- A holiday let for an entire property is estimated to cost 140% above the average rent for the borough
- According to research, 45% of lettings in Camden were from "a host with more than one property, feeding concerns some landlords are exploiting the rent differential"
