Landlord Has Been Ordered To Pay His Tenants Three Times The Value Of Their Deposits
- 03 Sep
Scotland's tenancy deposit scheme regulations has been put to use.
Sheriff Mackie ordered that landlord Andrew Meehan should compensate Ross Fraser and Alison Pease £3,450 after he did not secure their £1,150 deposit.
According to 24 Dash; Mr Fraser and Ms Pease said this in a joint complaint:
"We are delighted with the Sheriff's decision in this case. We believe it serves as a warning to other landlords about the necessity of complying with the tenancy deposit regulations, which remove the need for tenants to take rogue landlords to court to ensure the fair return of their deposits."
Housing charity Shelter Scotland, also said the landmark ruling "should send a strong message of comfort to all landlords who abide by the law and a powerful warning to those that don't".
According to, Graeme Brown (Shelter's director):
"The tenancy deposit scheme is a transparent and fair system brought in last year under a fanfare of publicity and awareness, so there is no reason why any landlord in Scotland should be failing to protect their tenants' deposits."
