PRESIDENT OF CIH CALLS FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO BUILD MORE HOMES FOR SOCIAL RENT
- 02 Feb
The government's limited focus on homeownership has been disagreed by the president of Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), she calls for the government to build homes for social rent as well.
Julie Fadden, chief executive of South Liverpool Homes spoke about the following at the CIH annual presidential dinner:
- Homeownership is "not a realistic prospect for at least a quarter of people in the UK"
- She mentioned that "helping someone to get a home and helping them own a home are not the same thing"
- A housing policy is therefore needed as this would portray a simple truth
- Policies which support homeownership, as well as that which recognises the important role of rented homes, should be part of a proper housing strategy
- The country is set to lose almost 250,000 socially rented homes between 2012 and 2020
- More local authorities should, therefore, help to build socially rented homes
- The effect of new lower benefit cap will be detrimental to many across the UK
Fadden also said:
"My own home city of Liverpool has suffered some of the largest cuts of any other local authority in the UK and yet it continues to strive with local housing associations to build homes for the future.
"Together we can achieve so much more", Inside Housing, reports.
