Proposal for bigger role for housing

If town halls fail to consider housing as part of their care services for older and disabled people they will be subject to court challenges.
Labour peers and National Housing Federation have made an amendment to legislation that could see town halls subjected to court challenges if they fail to consider housing as part of their care services for older and disabled people.
A crossbench peer, Lord Richard Best, has challenged the coalition government's care bill for failing to adequately integrate housing with health and social care and laid down two amendments, reports Inside Housing.
The move has been backed by NHF who believes the legislation and aimed at ensuring more joined-up services for people with care needs, has side lined housing.
One of the amendments would see a statutory obligation placed on local authorities to provide specialist financial housing advice for people that have care and support needs.
Another amendment places a duty on town halls to take into account the importance of ensuring adults with care and support needs are able to access suitable accommodation when commissioning services.
Lord Best has said that older and disabled people's housing needs often get neglected when they have their health and social care needs assessed.
The NHF and Lord Best have worked together to draft the amendments which will debated on the 9th October.
