Removal of housing benefits to under 21's to be resisted by Lib Dems
- 06 Oct
The Liberal Democrats have said they will resist the Conservatives plans to remove housing benefits to young people.
Communities minister Stephen Williams has said that the Tory party's flagship housing and welfare policies would be resisted by the Liberal Democrats if they find themselves in coalition again after the 2015 election, reports Inside Housing.
"We fought them already in this government about taking away housing benefit from young people. Personally I think that is utterly crazy," he said in an interview with Inside Housing at the Liberal Democrat conference in Glasgow.
"t seemed to be a large part of that discount was throwing away a lot of the energy efficiency standards this government has put in place and that's quite an extraordinary offer to me- you can have this cheaper house but going to be single glazed and you're going to be cold.,' he said.
He added that the Liberal Democrat's pledge to build 300,000 new homes every year would see a ‘massive drive' towards off site construction and large scale programmes of elderly people's and student housing.
