Rising property prices leads to thousands of evictions daily
- 04 Dec
Welfare reforms and rising property prices have deeply affected many tenants and caused high numbers of evictions.
Housing charities are calling for the support and protection for these renters. In November, the number of tenants evicted from their homes in England and Wales hit record levels.
Figures from the Ministry of Justice show that 11,100 properties were repossessed by bailiffs between July and September this year. Shelter, a homelessness charity, estimated that over 1,300 people a day (560 households) in England are put at risk from eviction or repossession.
There are many factors as to why there is such a large increase in evictions including the ever-rising property prices and welfare reforms. Ann Smith, a legal adviser for Shelter who offers free advice to anyone at risk of eviction stated, "The housing benefit system is so complicated, and people get so befuddled by what's happening to them, and then they end up in court".
In the last year, more than 40,000 households lost the fight to stay in their homes, with thousands of people in similar situations who will find it difficult to avoid this same fate also.
