THE GOVERNMENT PRESSURISES COUNCILS TO PROVIDE MORE ACCESSIBLE HOUSING
- 25 Apr
The Neighbourhood Planning Bill has been used by the government to pressurise councils to provide more accessible housing.
The Women's and Equalities Committee recommended the Department for Communities and Local Government to carry out an audit of Local Plans, to verify that they meet the new guidance set out in the Neighbourhood Planning Bill when it is brought into legislation.
According to a recent report on disability and the built environment where this was proposed:
- The government "must take action" to pressure councils to change their Local Plans "as a matter of urgency"
- Councils should not need to prove a speedy need for accessible housing but there should be an assumption that this type of housing is needed
- Planning permission should only be given to a development with evidence of "sufficient provision" for disabled access; when the government makes changes to the National Planning Policy Framework
- A call for the Equality and Human Rights Commission to investigate the planning inspectorate, to check it's compliance with the Equality Act 2010
MP's have said that "Local Plans should be overhauled if they fail on accessible housing".
