THE IMPACT OF ENGLAND'S BROKEN RENTAL MARKET ON FAMILIES

New research published by Shelter reveals the worrying impact the country's broken rental market is having on families.
The research found the following:
- The number of renting families has increased tremendously in the past ten years but the law has failed to keep up
- Renters can only have a secure home for six months, after which the landlord can ask them to leave, even without a reason wit just 2 months notice
- 42% of parents worry that their children will have to change schools due to future move
- 46% of parents said searching for a new rented home had a negative impact on their personal life
- 12% of parents said short-term rental negatively affected their relationships with friends and family members
Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat Leader, said:
"Having a secure home is fundamental for doing well at school and being successful later in life.
"It's a disgrace that in twenty-first century Britain, so many children don't have this basic right.
"The rental market needs massive reform to make it cheaper, safer and more secure. It's been neglected for far too long."
Due to the unstable and expensive rental market in England, the loss of private rented homes remains the single biggest cause of homelessness.
