Highest records of working families since 1996
- 10 Dec
A new report has shown that almost 90% of families are classified as ‘working families', the highest percentage since records began in 1996.
Research has also shown that parents of young children, who were part of a couple, were almost twice as likely to be in a job. In comparison to older mothers, young mothers under 24 were only half as likely to be in work.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the biggest increase has been among single parent families with dependent children.
Other data showed that just over half of the two million workless families were families where all members have been out of work for at least three years. Retirement seemed to be the most common reason for not being in employment. Around 1.7 million dependent children were living in workless families which is a record low according to ONS.
