Mobile Technology And Social Media Now raises A Quarter Of Charity Funds
- 28 Nov
A new report by Three reveals that donations through websites, social media and apps now account for £26 in every £100 donated in the UK, with an annual figure of £2.4 billion now being donated online and by mobile.
The report was commissioned by Three to support its partnership with men's health charity, Movember.
Three had researched the charitable behaviour of 2,000 smartphones in partnership with BrainJuicer, they reported that donations from mobile phones increased by 242 percent between 2011 and 2012.
Director of corporate affairs at Three, Hugh Davies, said:
"The internet and smartphones have changed the way we live, work and interact. They break down barriers and make life easier.
It's great to see these benefits extended to charity giving with dozens of quick and easy ways to donate to a charity online or on your mobile.
The simpler we make fundraising and donating, the more people will do it. It's exciting to see the mobile internet having such a positive impact on charities and their supporters."
An important finding of the report is the rise of the social fundraiser.
It has become easy to effortlessly connect with other fundraisers, thereby increasing global charity output.
The report also shows that:
"Close to 30 percent of those who made donations on their mobile phones wouldn't have made them through a different medium."
"A further 30 percent of people said they were more likely to donate after seeing someone share charity related content, such as on Twitter or Facebook, while 20 percent said it inspired them to do something for charity themselves."
