New pilot scheme to recover universal credit arrears

The DWP are trialling a new scheme which aims to make it easier for landlords to recover universal credit rent arrears by removing the requirements to post letters.
Starting last month, the trial is being conducted by social landlords and the DWP, reports Inside Housing.
Landlords are able to apply to have rent switched back to them under an ‘alternative payment arrangement’ if a tenant is more than two months in arrears. However this has only been able to occur if a letter is sent through the postal system. Many housing associations have complained that this system is too slow.
With this new pilot landlords are able to send APA requests through a secure email system.
Carmel Morris, Senior financial Inclusion Officer at Golden Gates Housing Trust said the initial results of the pilot were promising but that the DWP still had “a way to go” on improving the administration of universal credit.
