Over 11,000 households are now on universal credit
- 18 Sep
Government data shows that over 11,000 households were claiming universal credit last month.
The latest data released by the Department for Work and Pensions shows this was a rise from 7,460 households in July 2014 and 6,630 in June 2014. The increase is due to the rapid roll out of the programme, the DWP says, reports Inside Housing.
The roll out has mainly been in the north west of England and mainly for single claimants with no dependants or disabilities, however some centres are now processing claims for families.
In total, 13,260 people have started to claimed universal credit at some point between April 2013 and August 2014, with slightly more than 2,000 moving off the payment before 14 August.
A DWP spokesperson said: "By the end of this year, around one in eight jobcentres in Britain will be offering universal credit."
